Today Marks The 52nd Anniversary of The Temptations’ 18th Studio Album “1990” Originally Released on December 7, 1973.
“1990” is the eighteenth studio album by The Temptations released in 1973 on Gordy Records.
The album reached #19 on the U.S. Billboard Top LPs & Tapes charts.
The song "Let Your Hair Down" was released as the lead single from the album. The song peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, and at #27 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The song was the last song produced by Norman Whitfield that reached number one on the Billboard charts.
The album features strong performances by the group, particularly from Dennis Edwards, who is praised for his vocals on tracks like "Let Your Hair Down" and "You Set My Soul on Fire".
The album received mixed reviews from fans and some critics who felt the album was a departure from the group's classic Motown sound,
The Temptations were dissatisfied with Whitfield's socially conscious message tracks, which were by now failing commercially, and desired to get back to singing ballads.
Whitfield relented some here, placing message tracks such as "1990" and "Ain't No Justice" alongside love songs such as "Heavenly" and "You've Got My Soul on Fire".
