
Today Marks The 53rd Anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s 12th Studio Album and First Music Soundtrack “Trouble Man” Originally Released on December 8, 1972.
“Trouble Man” is a soundtrack and the twelfth studio album by American soul singer Marvin Gaye, released in 1972 on Tamla Records.
The album was a soundtrack to the 1972 Blaxploitation film of the same name, the Trouble Man. The album was the follow-up to his politically charged album What's Going On.
The album was the first album to be written and produced solely by Gaye. The only other album recorded under his full creative control was In Our Lifetime, released in 1981.
The soundtrack peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Best Selling Soul LP's chart and at #14 on the U.S. Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart.
Two singles were released from the album “You're the Man” and “Trouble Man”.
“You're the Man” peaked at #7 on the U. S. Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles chart and at #50 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
“Trouble Man” peaked at #4 on the U. S. Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles chart and at #7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Other popular songs from the album was "'T' Plays It Cool" and "Don't Mess with Mister 'T'".
"'T' Plays It Cool" was sampled by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince for their song “A Touch of Jazz” the song is featured on their album “Rock the House”.
“Trouble Man” would become Marvin Gaye's only soundtrack and film score. Critics gave the album favorable reviews while sometimes comparing Gaye's soundtrack efforts to that of Issac Hayes' and Curtis Mayfield's. Following this, other R&B musicians would produce soundtracks of their own, including James Brown, Barry White and fellow Motown acts, Willie Hutch and Edwin Starr.
