New Birth - The New Birth

Today Marks The 55th Anniversary of New Birth’s Debut Studio Album “The New Birth “ Originally Released on November 1, 1970.

“The New Birth” is the debut studio album by R&B/funk band New Birth released in 1970 on RCA Records.

The Nite-Liters became New Birth by merging with other groups, including The Now Sound, Mint Julep, and Love, Peace & Happiness, under the guidance of producers Harvey Fuqua and Vernon Bullock.

This new collective under the supervision of the former Motown producer Harvey Fuqua, officially formed in 1970, combined the instrumental Nite-Liters with various male and female vocalists from the other groups to create a larger, self-contained soul and funk ensemble.

The debut album was well-received for its blend of soulful and funky sounds, though some critics have noted that the band tried too many styles, resulting in a sound that wasn't always clearly defined.

The album was produced by Harvey Fuqua, with Vernon Bullock also credited as an assistant producer. Fuqua's influence is heard in the way songs are built around a simple phrase, as exemplified by "The Unh Song".

The band features multiple vocalists, including both male and female singers. While the male vocals and the overall soulful sound were appreciated, the dramatic style of the female vocalist was a point of criticism for some listeners.

Though the album was not a commercial success at the time of its 1970 release, certain tracks have been noted in retrospective reviews for their inventive sound.

Notable tracks from the debut album include, "UNH Song", "Pretty Words Don't Mean a Thing (Lie to Me)", "What'll I Do" and "One Way Bus".

The band also recorded a couple covers on the album like Rufus Thomas’ “Do the Funky Chicken”, and Tommy Edwards’ hit song "It's All in the Game".
