Today Marks The 47th Anniversary of George Duke’s 12th Studio Album “Follow the Rainbow” Originally Released on February 16, 1979.
“Follow the Rainbow” is the twelfth studio album by jazz-funk keyboardist George Duke released in 1979 via Epic Records.
The album peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart and at #17 on the U.S. Billboard Top Soul Albums chart.
Three songs were released as singles from the album, "Party Down", “Say That You Will” and
"Party Down" failed to reach any of the U.S. Billboard charts.
“Say That You Will” reached #25 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart.
"Pluck" failed to reach any of the U.S. Billboard charts.
The album moves away from complex fusion towards radio-friendly funk and disco, reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire. It is noted for its "snappy funk" and "relaxed love grooves".
The album boasts excellent, tight instrumentation from a lineup including drummer Ricky Lawson and percussionist Sheila Escovedo.
While some critics and jazz purists might find it too commercial, it is widely praised as a "consistently excellent" example of 1970s funk.
