The album was arranged by Fred Wesley and James Brown it was executively produced by James Brown.

“Food For Thought” is an essential J.B.’s funk album it features many of their classic material with songs like "Theme From King Heroin", "Pass the Peas" and "The Grunt" these songs are instantly recognizable to yours truly through being sampled by numerous hip-hop artists.

The album is remarkable that it features three very different sets of J.B.'s. it includes the funk monster "The Grunt", a hard socking rhythm riot that was waxed by the Original - that is, the first - J.B.'s, with Bootsy Collins on bass.

The majority of the song was composed by Fred Wesley who took over after Bootsy and Catfish Collins upped and left the band in 1971.
