
Today Marks The 48 Anniversary of The Ohio Players 13th Studio Album “Mr. Mean” Originally Released in December 13, 1977.
Mr. Mean is the 13th studio album by the Ohio Players, and the 7th album recorded for Mercury Records. The album is the soundtrack to the 1977 blaxploitation movie of the same name.
The album reached #11 on the U.S. Billboard Top Soul LPs chart and at #68 on the U.S. Billboard Top LPs chart.
Two songs were released as singles from the album "Good Luck Charm” and "Magic Trick".
"Good Luck Charm” reached #51 on the U.S. Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles chart and at #101 just beneath the Billboard Hot 100.
"Magic Trick" reached #93 on the U.S. Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles chart.
“Mr Mean” was recorded for blaxploitation actor Fred Williamson’s movie of the same name. The music was made for the sole purpose of it being used for the eponymous 1977 film, perhaps the reason why it felt like a departure from their previous work, but fans and critics reacted to it with mixed opinions.
The band was also featured and performed in the film, The band’s leader Clarence Satchell had a brief acting role in the film as well.
“Mr. Mean” was the first time the entire band were seen on the cover posing with their model.
