The album peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Black Albums chart and at #23 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums chart.
"Square Biz" peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, #12 on the U.S. Billboard US Dance Club Songs chart and at #50 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
"It Must Be Magic" peaked 12 on the U.S. Billboard US Dance Club Songs chart and at #30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
"Portuguese Love" peaked at #54 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
“It Must Be Magic” was her last studio album for Motown and the highest-selling of Marie's tenure with the Motown label.
The album a nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1982 Grammy Awards.
In 2002, the album was re-released in a remastered and expanded CD edition containing three additional tracks (two of which were recorded during a live concert in Long Beach, California).
