Today Marks The 49th Anniversary of Odyssey’s Debut Self-Titled Album Studio Album “Odyssey” Originally Released on January 23, 1988.
“Odyssey” is the debut self-titled album by New York City, R&B/Disco trio Odyssey released in 1977 on RCA Victor Records.
The album reached #16 on the U.S. Billboard Top Black Albums chart and at #36 on the U.S. Billboard Top Pop Albums chart.
Three songs were released from the album as singles "Native New Yorker", "Weekend Lover".and "Easy Come, Easy Go".
"Native New Yorker" peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Black Singles chart and at #21 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
"Weekend Lover" reached #37 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Black Singles chart and at #57 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
"Easy Come, Easy Go" peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.
The tenor saxophone solo on Odyssey's "Native New Yorker" recording is played by Michael Brecker. George Young was part of the horn section, where he played alto sax.
Critics praise the song "Native New Yorker" as a brilliant capture of New Yorkers' love/hate relationship with their city. Others enjoy the song's orchestration and say it's good music that's not often heard on the radio.
The album was produced by American arranger, producer, conductor and composer, Charlie Calello.
