James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006).

James Brown was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, musician, and record producer.

James Brown was one of the most important and influential entertainers in 20th-century popular music and whose remarkable achievements earned him the sobriquet “The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business.”

His influence inspired a generation of some of the world's most gifted entertainers including Michael Jackson, Prince, Mick Jagger, MC Hammer and Bruno Mars.

James Brown is one of “The Most Sampled Artis in Music History”.

Countless artists across many music genres, especially in Hip-Hop, have sampled James Brown, including Public Enemy, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Eric B. & Rakin, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, N.W.A, EPMD, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Tyler, the Creator, and Mariah Carey, and many more far too many to name.

His most recognizable song "Funky Drummer" specifically Clyde Stubblefield's iconic drum break, has been sampled thousands of times, with estimates ranging from over 1,000 to more than 1,500 times in genres from hip-hop to pop, making it one of the most sampled recordings in history.

Many of hip-hop’s producers are known for utilizing  vocal snippets, and drum breaks from some of his most iconic songs producers heavily sample James Brown for his iconic drum breaks and soulful grooves, This includes legends like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy's Bomb Squad, and J Dilla are known for frequently digging into his vast catalog, particularly "Funky Drummer" and "The Payback," foundational to tracks by Nas, N.W.A., LL Cool J, and Big Daddy Kane. Brown's music is the bedrock of hip-hop, with producers using his breaks for punch, rhythm, and pure funk.

James Brown had 17 number-one hits on the Billboard R&B charts, though none reached the #1 spot on the overall Pop (Hot 100) chart, with his highest pop peak being "Living in America" at #4. He holds records for numerous top 40 and top 10 R&B singles, cementing his legacy as the "Godfather of Soul".

James Brown's biggest hits showcase his evolution from soul to funk, with iconic tracks like "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud," "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine," and "Get Up Offa That Thing," defining his legacy as the Godfather of Soul and funk. Other major hits include "Cold Sweat," "Mother Popcorn," "The Payback," and his breakthrough hit "Try Me," demonstrating his unparalleled influence on R&B and pop music.

James Brown's legacy is summarized by his title, the "Godfather of Soul," as he revolutionized music by pioneering funk with stripped-down, percussive rhythms, influencing hip-hop and countless genres through sampling. Analytically, he was a powerful cultural figure, using hits like "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud" as civil rights anthems for Black empowerment and self-reliance, despite a tumultuous personal life marked by struggles. His electrifying stage presence, relentless work ethic, and innovation cemented his status as a cultural icon, breaking barriers for Black entertainers and leaving an indelible mark on American music and pop culture.
